So, you've made up your mind on learning a language. Maybe you know exactly which one, maybe you're still pondering your options. Well, whether you've already decided on which to study or not, we got you covered with this simple checklist to make sure you're more than ready to start!
(If you already know which language you're studying, skip step 1!)
- If you're deciding on a language for academic or professional reasons, think of which one would be more useful to you. If you just want to learn a language for the sake of learning, research and listen to the languages you're interested in and narrow it down to which one you believe would be more fun or rewarding to learn.
- Set your goal! It should be an achievable one with a deadline. For example, I want to study Japanese and my goal is to be able to hold a basic conversation by the end of the year. Be realistic when setting it up, thinking about your routine and how serious you want to be with your learning.
- Find your learning style. Want a personalised experience? Take 1:1 lessons! Would like to build friendships and have more people to practice with? Take group lessons! Or, would you like to just do your thing without anyone telling you what to do? Research for good textbooks or content online!
- Start learning! You can get inspired with many polyglots who share their journeys online and join communities if you ever feel stuck! Watch Lindie Botes talk about her own journey learning 8+ languages!
